Israel-Hamas War:
Netanyahu and his government continue to face pressure at home about the uncertainty of post-war Gaza, including from Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s cabinet. Additionally, thousands of protesters have taken to the street in Tel Aviv demanding a new hostage deal with Hamas.
On Wednesday, Spain, Norway, and Ireland announced they would recognize Palestine as an independent state. Such statements further increase international pressure on Netanyahu’s government as most Western countries have expressed support for Israel up until this point.
The International Criminal Court requested arrest warrants for Hamas leaders and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on charges of war crimes. President Joe Biden called this move “outrageous,” stating that “There is no equivalence — none — between Israel and Hamas.”
Iran:
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died on Sunday, May 19 in a helicopter crash. During the brief search period, Iranian officials scrambled to control threats abroad from enemy nations and terrorist groups as well as threats from home. Vice President Mohammad Mokhber is now serving as the acting president.

Trump’s hush money trial is nearing an end as both the prosecution rested its case after remarks from Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen. The defense also rested its case. Both sides will adjourn on Tuesday, May 28 for final closing arguments.
On Wednesday Biden announced another round of student debt cancellations for 160,000 people. His administration has canceled a total of $167 billion, the largest compared to any predecessors.
